A Hurricane in Brooklyn: Mary’s Story

By Story of America Team

Mary Ellen of Pier Glass in Red Hook, Brooklyn shares her story about how Hurricane Sandy gravely damaged her business and her home. Despite the property damage to the glass-blowing studio, she draws strength from the community that pitched in to help her and her colleagues clean up and rebuild the studio.

A Hurricane in Brooklyn is a video series that is part of Story of America: A Nation Divided. In this series, we explore how the Sandy recovery effort both exposed existing social divisions and also helped create a sense of community among the residents, business owners, and volunteers that poured in from all over the New York area.
